Shimano introduces a new free spool reel for smaller budgets – the Baitrunner ST – which makes their Baitrunner technology more accessible and will elevate this legendary marque to even greater heights of popularity with specimen anglers worldwide.

Shimano Baitrunner – the original free spool reel has seen many technological advances and cosmetic alterations over the last three decades, spawning countless imitators along the way.

But confidence in the design and development process has always given Shimano total belief in one simple fact: All the others are only competing to be “best of the rest”.

Now, anglers can experience the free-spool technology from the very best thanks to the low-end price tag of the Shimano ST RB reels.

Baitrunner technology provides a fast and efficient way to set your reel in free-spool mode to allow fish to take line and run freely. The free-spool mode can then be automatically disengaged by turning the handle when you’re ready to set the hook and play a fish using the reel’s standard drag.

The RB version of Shimano’s Baitrunners features a rear drag adjustment so both the drag and Baitrunner tension are adjusted via separate dials at the back of the reel. A quick flick of the lever is all it takes to engage the Baitrunner.

The Shimano ST RB comes in a sleek and timeless matte black finish with an XT7 spool finished in silver, which will please the purists and tackle tarts alike. Not only do they look great, but the XT7 composite carbon is also Shimano’s tried and tested material for a reel that will stand up to rigorous use on the bank.

The ST models are packed with far more advanced features than you’d reasonably expect to find on a Baitrunner at this price point. Line lay is good thanks to our Varispeed oscillation which involves an oval and a square gear, computer engineered to interact perfectly. Incorporating a gutsy 4.6:1 gear ratio, double handle and the equivalent of 5 ball bearings.
